SSR

So, back when I was in elementary and middle school, they used to make us do this thing called SSR (silent sustained reading). What it was was when they would make us bring a book to class, or pick one off a shelf, and we would read it for a half hour to an hour, silently, to ourselves. Now…here’s my problem with this. First off, it sounds like a fu*kin’ disease, okay.

“I’m sorry Travis, I’m afraid you have SSR”

“Will I lead a normal life?!”

“No, I’m perscribing you read a bestseller, that’s the only way to make the muscle cramps in your eyes decrease.”

Like, it sounds like a serious, awful, life threatening disease, does it not? Right. Secondly, it’s stupid to MAKE kids read. A kid who wants to read is gonna read, one who doesn’t, ISN’T going to, but by forcing them, you’re making them believe it’s something they HAVE to do through out their lives. Such as taxes, becoming mature, and getting a job. ALL OF WHICH ARE AVOIDABLE BY THE WAY. But whatever. Now is not a time to flaunt the law. But if a kid is forced to do something, say as, mowing the lawn or brushing their teeth, it’s gonna be programmed into them, subconsciously, that it is bad because it’s not what they WANT to do, it’s what they HAVE to do. Therefor, it was a dumb idea, and we should stop it. You want reading to increase in American children? STOP SSR. LET THEM DISCOVER THE JOY OF READING THEMSELVES.

Why aren’t I in politics?
